People are boarding the airplane! I am flying to Amsterdam and then to Madrid. Then I catch a train to Leon (this sounds like it should be in France, not Spain), and then another train to Astorga, just to the west of Leon. I arrive in Astorga 20:41 Saturday and will hook-up with Ted. Sunday morning I start to walk.

This blog chronicles my hike across northern Spain with my friend Ted. We are following the 1,000 year old pilgrimage route know as The Way, or the Camino de Santiago. This route can begin anywhere, but ends at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain - the site of the remains of St. James, the brother of Jesus Christ.

Packing has commenced in earnest and I have obtained everything I can think of. It's surprising how I started with only three changes of quick dry clothing, and am now closing in on 20 pounds of stuff. One of the last decisions I need to make is whether I take my DSLR camera. I love the photo quality and RAW file format, but it is heavy and bulky, even if I take only one lens.
My departure is Friday September 30, 2011 in the early evening, from Pearson Airport in Toronto.
